Director Bonnie Barnes of the North Florida Land Trust was our guest speaker on May 17th.

Where will your grandchildren go for outdoor recreation?  Parks and recreation areas are threatened regularly by development.  So, the now 12-year-old North Florida Land Trust was created and dedicated “to permanently preserving natural areas and special places in North Florida.”

As NFLT Director Bonnie Barnes explained, the trust’s job is to acquire wilderness and environmentally sensitive areas and have conservation easements/permanent deed restrictions attached to the properties.  To date, they have conserved 1100 acres, and they are in the process of trying to save more than 500 other properties covering thousands of acres.  Their current focus is on lands adjacent to important water sheds, including 40 acres in Ponte Vedra Beach – the Goelz Preserve at the northeast corner of Mickler and A1A!  Ms. Barnes has even enlisted the assistance of UNF Engineering School’s Senior Design Team to complete a civil engineering project for North Guana Landing.
One of the ways the State of Florida has assisted NFLT is by selling lands of no historic value and using the funds to purchase and protect at-risk lands.  Other funding sources include grants, donations, and fundraising.
We sincerely appreciate Director Bonnie Barnes Herculean efforts to protect our fragile wilderness environments.  She encourages residents and visitors to get out and use these lands.  For more information, visit www.NorthFloridaLandTrust.org.
