Coins for the dead is a form of respect for the dead. The long-standing military practice began in classical antiquity when people believed the dead needed coins to pay a ferryman to cross the river Styx. In modern times the practice has been observed in the U.S. and Canada: visitors leave coins on the headstones of former military personnel. The coins show respect and serve as a silent "we were here".
In honor of this year's Memorial Day, on Saturday June 6, Palm Valley Rotarians will visit Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville to place pennies (traditional coin to show respect and visitation at the gravesite) on the headstones of local fallen military personnel.
